The African Diaspora
The African Diaspora in North America is represented by more than 39 million people and is a major player in the continent’s development. Official remittance totals are estimated in excess of $40 billion annually (2015), with informal remittances reaching $120B – $160B. This exceeds both Official Development Assistance (ODA) and Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). The African Diaspora is also a source of “social remittances” in the form of skills, ideas, and values. Indeed, according to census data, the large African Diaspora in the United States represents the most educated immigrant population and is disproportionately employed at senior levels of the federal, state, and local governments. These highly educated and experienced executives are at the core of ACDC’S technical support programs.
